Alila
Ubud - one of the 50 most beautiful pools in
the world
If you were to rank the 50 most beautiful hotel
swimming pools in the world, then Alila Ubud
would be right up there at the top (actually
it is – seen on the the cover of Travel
and Leisure). Moving from the pool bar into
the cool depths, the water’s surface seems
to flow endlessly through the terraced jungle
and reach up to the sky.

3 Hotel
Groups to Watch in Asia: …" Alila
Hotels and Resorts - A relatively new player
to join the ranks of a select breed of operators
that specialise in sexy, stylish, high-end boutique
hotels and resorts in Asia. The company's first
property debuted in Jakarta in 2001; another
two high profile Bali properties ( the Chedi
Ubud and the Serai Manggis) expanded the portfolio
in 2002, and the company continues to make ground,
recently signing another resort in Phuket. We
believe Alila should be a player to watch, particularly
since it has pedigree to back it up (the company
is headed by founding partners of GHM Indonesia
and Mandara Spa)."

I’d
like to thank you for your hospitality and for
the attention you’ve had your staff given
to our event all week… I must say the
rooms are excellent and the services we have
gotten from each and every staff in the rooms,
front desk, buzz café, bell boys, everyone
here has been warm and cordial. To make the
most impression and I would appreciate if you
did let them know. The first is Karno who waited
on us regardless of how late it was and how
difficult it was to meet our needs. The second
is Ferry, driver extraordinaire. He not only
drives, he ensures our safety and is incredibly
considerate and helpful. 2 assets to any hotels!

Minutes
away from the city centre is the
Alila Ubud resort, a member of the
Design Hotels Group – properties
distinguished for their outstanding
architectural design. Which in this
case is masculine and warm with
a blend of rustic Bali and modern
day luxury. Perched hillside overlooking
Ayung River, with panoramic views
of Bali’s emerald green rainforests,
the resort will have you surrendering
to mother nature’s embrace.
Sitting on my balcony looking out,
I had box office seats to nature’s
own orchestra made up of geckos
and the like. And a team of telepathic
staff who always seemed to know
what I needed before I did. |

Next
comes Manggis in East Bali’s Karangasem
Regency. A central spot that’s minutes
away from Tenganan Village that’s
home to the traditional cloth called Geringsing
(believed to protect the wearer with magical
powers) and Pura Besakih or the Mother
Temple. Laden with history and myth it’s
the place to be if you want to see more
of traditional Bali.
And in the heart of it all is the Alila
Manggis resort, also a member of the elite
Design Hotels Group. Set a stone’s
throw away from the beach, with views
of the ocean that stretch as far as the
eye can see then vanish into the horizon,
it’s a welcomed sight. And with
the grounds lush with swaying coconut
trees and rolling greens, it felt like
my own little piece of heaven. The perfect
getaway from hectic schedules, it’s
like a potent shot of tranquillity. To

Refueling
in Style in Bali
The Alila Ubud (Chedi) was very chic and very
private, the Alila Manggis (Serai) more open
and expansive, so together they promised a yin-yang
contrast.
The Alila Ubud seemed designed for the world
weary (a single television in a corner of the
library, a well-stocked bar near the infinity
pool, a full-service spa), while the Alila Manggis,
although nicely laid out for serious loafing,
also catered to those for whom the world is
never enough (mountain bikes for rent, an outrigger
canoe on call and an itinerary of guided treks
that included a four-hour climb to the summit
of Mount Agung, departing at 2 a.m. to catch
the sunrise).

Trip to ALiLA Ubud – April 2004
…we had a great time in Ubud. First,
the villa is just perfect, then for breakfast,
we had a sumptuous meal, and then we were
presented with the surprise, banana in pancake
which got me chuckling … But the finale
must be the dinner that we had off the swimming
pool, with candles leading down from the swimming
pool to a secret dinner hide-out. The timing
was at 9pm, with a personal valet who had
to run countless times up and down the stairs
to serve us our 6 course dinner. The dinner
was just exquisite,
beyond any thing that I have experienced,
all 6 courses went into a higher plane of
ecstasy each time, and finished with the birthday
chocolate cake, right out of the oven, with
chocolate oozing out. My, it felt almost like
my birthday. The other thing I was really
amazed was that the hotel served Rose Wine
from Bali. Another surprise.
You can bet your life that… will be
evangelising this to his friends and colleagues
about what a great birthday he had at none
other than the Alila Hotel, with service over
and above the rest.
